The Trend
elec had used it as him MSN icon for a couple of years. Frits only recently started using it as HIS, but upside-down. Then, j2 capitalized on everyone's success and got a sideways one.
They terrorized the world, and it looked a-something like this.

DO'S IT YOURSELF
If you have some program that can open PSDs, you can make your own Elecface. Like, all potato-head style, too! Alls you gotta do is get this thing.

The origin of the Elecface
It was a day in 2004 when Elec decided he needed a new icon than the boring he had been using for a while. Carelessly navigating to (what was then) the MSN Messenger page and saw this wee image in the top right corner:
And as Elec was known to be a person who liked and posted the http://www.xs4all.nl/~ernstmul/images/msn60/smile008.gif icon excessively, he thought that the icon was very good at identifying him that way. So therefore, he cropped the image, fixed the rounded corners, removed some of the overlapping text, and voila! The very first Elecface was born.
